The port town of Eilat lies in the most southern part of Israel. It is a significant tourist center on the coast of the Red Sea, which contains some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world. Piešťany entered into a partnership with Eilat three years ago, becoming its sister city; last year Eilat inaugurated Piešťany Street. This paradise for swimmers, divers and windsurfers commemorated the 60th anniversary of its founding on 5 March 2009. The celebration was connected with a number of cultural events. The mayor of Eilat, Itzhak Halevi, invited his colleagues from sister cities on the occasion of the anniversary: the mayor of Kamen, Germany, Hermann Hupe; the mayor of Kampen, Holland, Jan Oosterhof; and the mayor of Piešťany, Remo Cicutto. Israeli President Shimon Peres also attended, at which time he met the mayor of our town.
Many inhabitants of Eilat, tourists and invited guests were interested in the promotion stand of the town of Piešťany and the information there about the spa town where rheumatoid diseases are treated; many asked for and received information about spa treatment, traditions and accommodation.
Hoisting the flags of Eilat and its sister cities was also a part of the celebration. The yellow, blue and white flag of Piešťany will wave in this beautiful port town and recreational resort to commemorate our partnership and cooperation.
